CONSTITUTIONAL COURT ABOLISHES DISCRIMINATING CUSTOMARY LAW AGAINST WOMEN OWNING PROPERTY

On 8 December 2008, the Constitutional Court found in favour of women who were previously discriminated against, when it pronounced judgement in the case of ELIZABETH GUMEDE v PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF SOUTH AFRICA & 6 OTHERS Case CCT 50/08 [2008] ZACC 23, in a matter involving customary marriages.
