 In South Africa, the term legal pertains to anything related to the law or the legal system. This encompasses a wide range of areas, including but not limited to:

 

  1. Legislation: The laws enacted by the government, such as Acts of Parliament or municipal by-laws.
  2. Regulations: Rules issued by government departments and agencies to implement the legislation.
  3. Judicial Decisions: Court rulings that interpret laws and set legal precedents.
  4. Legal Rights and Obligations: The entitlements and duties that individuals and organizations have under the law.
  5. Legal Procedures: The formal processes and steps involved in enforcing laws and adjudicating disputes, including court proceedings and administrative actions.
  6. Legal Documents: Official documents, such as contracts, wills, deeds, and affidavits, that have legal significance and are used to establish and enforce rights and obligations.

In everyday usage, legal can also refer to matters that are authorized or permitted by law, as well as to the profession of law, including the work done by lawyers, judges, and other legal practitioners.
